A history of the evolution of the University of Louisville's athletics mascot, known as the Cardinal Bird or Louie. Covers the development of the costume used for in-person appearances as well as the Cardinal Bird's depiction in print.

Mascot Costume History Timeline

Since 1953, students have embodied the Cardinal Bird in costumes made of a variety of materials. The first Cardinal costume was created by a Home Economics professor without a lot of fanfare, but later versions have drawn their share of media attention.
