Change How You See, See How You Change, a photography exhibition that redefines how we see medicine – not just as science, but as a deeply human experience. Created in collaboration with local participants and University of Louisville health sciences students, this portrait collection invites you to see the person behind the diagnosis - celebrating their joy, strength, and uniqueness. Each image tells a story, reminding us that every patient is more than their condition; they are individuals with rich lives, emotions, and identities that deserve recognition. As you explore these portraits, we invite you to reflect on the power of empathy in healthcare and the importance of genuinely seeing, listening, and understanding the people we care for.
Through partnership with Positive Exposure, the University of Louisville Health Sciences Office of Health Equity and Engagement, the Kornhauser Health Sciences Library, and the School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, this exhibition aims to remind us that we all share fundamental human experiences. By embracing these common experiences, we enhance our understanding of compassion in medicine and within the communities we serve.
Founded by award-winning photographer Rick Guidotti in New York City, Positive Exposure utilizes the arts and advocacy to create a more inclusive world, celebrating our shared humanity. Through international collaborations with nonprofit organizations, hospitals, medical schools, educational institutions, museums, galleries, advocacy groups, and communities, Positive Exposure works to effect a sea-change in societal attitudes towards individuals and communities at risk of stigma and exclusion. We all share the same need: The need to be seen. The need to be heard. The need to belong. Positive Exposure strives to create spaces rooted in unity, respect, and inclusion - amplifying the beauty of human diversity and fostering a culture of belonging.
