The Photographic Archives, part of Archives & Special Collections, includes almost two million photographs along with related records and manuscripts. Louisville history is well-represented in studio collections like the Caufield & Shook and Royal Photo Company collections. In addition to local interest materials, the collection includes images from world-renowned fine prints photographers as well as material from documentary projects, such as the Standard Oil (New Jersey) collection, directed by Roy Stryker.
All materials are available for research. The staff assists researchers, provides presentations and special exhibitions and gives advice on the care of photographs.
The Photographic Archives exhibits photographs year-round in its gallery and reading room.
