Recent events in the Breonna Taylor case have highlighted the role of the grand jury in Kentucky criminal procedure. Law students assessing legal claims on social media and the press would benefit from consulting Professor Les Abramson’s Kentucky Criminal Practice and Procedure, 5th ed., volumes 8 & 9 in the widely used Kentucky Practice series published by Thomson-Reuters.
The law library subscribes to this series in print, and copies can be found on Kentucky reserve and in the practitioner’s collection on Range F-134.
It also is available as part of Westlaw Edge. Simply select Kentucky from the State Materials tab. Then under Secondary Sources, click the Kentucky Practice Series and find Kentucky Criminal Practice and Procedure. Grand Jury Proceedings is Chapter 10.
(By the way, while you are at it, you might want to review the material on felony wanton endangerment in Prof. Abramson’s Substantive Criminal Law, 3rd ed., volumes 10 & 10A of the same Kentucky Practice series.)
Of course, future trial lawyers will want to consult the Kentucky Rules of Criminal Procedure for grand juries, RCr 5.02-RCr 5.24, available on Westlaw and Lexis Advance, and through the Kentucky Court of Justice’s public domain version.
