In addition to maintaining the library’s collection, assisting with library users’ research, answering reference questions, and teaching, our librarians also publish and present their own work. Over the course of 2018, UofL Law Librarians have researched, written, and presented about a diverse range of legal and library-related topics from the global to the local. Some publications cover current legal issues in areas such as copyright and Kentucky case law, while others take a historical look at people and places related to our library and law school.

Director of the Law Library, David Ensign, published several columns on aspects of copyright law in Kentucky Libraries.

Technical Services Librarian, Scott Campbell, spent the year researching the Law School’s namesake Justice Louis D. Brandeis. He published a compilation of Brandeis quotes in 2017, and presented about this new book in January 2018 at the Filson Historical Society. In March, he published an article in the Journal of Supreme Court History, “Notes for a Lost Memoir of Louis D. Brandeis”, which incorporates an unpublished draft of a Brandeis memoir with some light edits and footnotes that provide clarity and background. The discovery of new material about Brandeis’s life in his own words caused quite a bit of excitement among Brandeis experts and Supreme Court scholars, and was featured in a post on SCOTUSblog.

Online Services Librarian, Erin Gow, acts as the editor for the Kentucky Library Association's newsletter, and co-presented a session with Robin Harris at the September KLA Joint Conference on “Getting Published in IN-FO-CUS and Kentucky Libraries”. At the end of October, she published a blog post about “Working with FCIL Collections in British Law Libraries” on the DipLawMatic Dialogues blog for the Foreign, Comparative, and International Law Special Interest Section of the American Association of Law Libraries.

Public Services Librarian, Robin Harris, acts as the editor for the Kentucky Library Association's scholarly journal, and co-presented a session with Erin Gow at the September KLA Joint Conference on “Getting Published in IN-FO-CUS and Kentucky Libraries”. Her ongoing work to support and empower women was recognized in November, at the Women's Empowerment Lunch at the UofL University Club, where Robin received the Women’s Empowerment Award for 2018.

Associate Director of the Law Library, Kurt Metzmeier, published several columns and short articles on topics such as legislative history, Kentucky cases, and criminal law.

Law Library Archivist and Digital Collections Librarian, Marcus Walker, drew on historical records from the Law Library in “A Pearl of a Librarian”, published in Kentucky Libraries Summer issue. He also stayed busy putting together a second article, published in Bench & Bar in the July/August issue: "I’ll Expect a W.P.A. Check in the Morning".
