Drafted in 1787, the Constitution provides the foundation for the American system of government. It superseded the Articles of Confederation

Work began to amend the Constitution almost immediately with the drafting of the Bill of Rights in 1789, but in total only 27 amendments have been made to the Constitution over the years.
