On April 26, 2021, U.S. Attorney General Merritt Garland announced that the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division would investigate Louisville Metro Police Department to determine if there is a pattern racially discriminatory practices in the department.
The Justice Department announced on March 8, 2023, that the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government have engaged in a pattern or practice of conduct that violates the U.S. Constitution and federal law. The Department of Justice also announced that it has entered into an agreement in principle with Louisville Metro and LMPD, which have committed to resolving the department’s findings through a court-enforceable consent decree.
