Research Questions

What do you think of this research question?: “How does work-life balance affect employees?”

Narrowing the scope of a research question:

  • WHO are you focusing on? (Specific group, profession, age, gender, etc.)
  • WHERE is the issue happening? (Industry, country, remote vs. in-person work, etc.)
  • WHEN is the issue relevant? (Recent trends, during COVID, post-pandemic, etc.)
  • WHAT aspect of this topic (work-life balance) are you interested in? (Causes, effects, solutions, specific practices, policies, challenges?)
  • WHY is this question important? (What’s the impact?)

Think through the questions above, then work with a partner to revise the initial research question. Your new research question doesn't have to address ALL of the questions above, but try to use 2-3 of the questions to narrow your scope. Post your revised question here.

Google

Work with a partner to:

  1. Google: work-life balance for mothers
  2. Answer the following questions:
    • How many results did you get for this search? (Click the Tools drop-down.)
    • Browse the first page or two of results. What types of sources do you see?
    • Try lateral reading on one unfamiliar source you see. What did you find out about the source? Does it meet your definition of a quality, credible source?
    • Are there source types that you don’t see or that you'd like to see more of when conducting research?
