AI & Research

  • Brainstorm with a classmate: When doing a research assignment in college, what value do you think an AI tool might add? What are the weaknesses of AI tools for research?

Let's explore some AI tools! Open the AI Comparison Tool below, which allows you to search ChatGPT and Claude at the same time.

Copy and paste each prompt in. Evaluate the credibility of the output you get from both ChatGPT and Claude.

Prompt #1: Write a 100 word biography about [enter your own name].

Prompt #2: List, annotate, and cite 5 peer-reviewed sources on how Beyonce navigates motherhood.

Prompt #3: Summarize the following article in 100 words: "A Complicated Transformation: BEYONCÉ, 'Blue,' and the Politics of Black Motherhood."

AI as a Research Assistant

The research process (simplified):

  1. Come up with a research question.
    • AI as a tool for brainstorming and refining your research interests.
    • Example: I want to write a college-level research paper about Beyonce and motherhood. Interview me about my interests to come up with a good question I could pursue.
  2. Strategize about where and how to search.
    • AI as a tool for generating keywords and thinking through related academic disciplines.
    • Example: Give me keywords and relevant disciplines for my research question: How does Beyonce visually represent motherhood in Lemonade?
  3. Search for sources.
