Personal Statement

In my favorite short story, "The Library of Babel", written in 1941 by the great Argentine writer and librarian, Jorge Luis Burgos, he summarizes the complex library at the heart of his tale in a deceptively simple sentence: "In order for a book to exist, it is sufficient that it be possible." As a librarian who works with students, faculty, and staff to locate, access, and utilize material, I would perhaps change his phrasing to the less prosaic, but more mundanely practical, "In order for a book to exist, it is sufficient that it be procurable." Helping our patrons find what they need to conduct their research, enjoy their interests, or illuminate their minds is at the core of my belief in libraries, as well as my job duties. If you ever have a question, I hope that you will ask, so that I can help locate, access, and procure.
