Human Resources information for faculty and their supervisors

Conversion of Faculty Appointments

Library Directors in consultation with Program Directors and the faculty member may petition the Dean regarding the conversion of a faculty appointment from term to tenure track or from tenure-track to term for positions in their respective areas.

To initiate a request for converting a term to a tenure-track appointment: The Library Director provides the Dean of Libraries with a statement stating the administrative rationale for the appointment change. The statement should also include input from the Program Director. The Dean will consult with the Personnel Committee regarding the faculty member’s promise for success in a probationary position. The Dean makes a unit recommendation to the Provost based on the information provided and the overall strategic needs of the Libraries. Final approval rests with the university administration.

To initiate a request for converting a tenure-track to term appointment: The Library Director provides the Dean of Libraries with a statement providing the administrative rationale for the appointment change. The statement should also include input from the Program Director. A request for this type of conversion must be received before the end of the faculty member’s fifth year of service in a probationary appointment. The Dean will consult with the Personnel Committee regarding faculty welfare/governance issues. The Dean makes a unit recommendation to the Provost based on the information provided, the impact on the tenure-track-to-term ratio of the libraries’ faculty and the overall strategic needs of the Libraries. Final approval rests with the university administration.
