WGST 591/691 - Harbolt: Gender & Environment Research Paper

For this assignment, you will complete a 10- to 15-page research paper focusing on gender and the environment. Your paper should include at least three peer-reviewed articles and/or books as sources.

Finding Journal Articles

Through the library

1. The best place to find peer-reviewed journal articles is in library databases. The library subscribes to hundreds of databases in a variety of subject areas. To get started searching in databases, go to the library homepage, library.louisville.edu, and click Subject Guides under Quick Tools.
2. These subject guides will show you links to databases that contain articles in a specific subject area. Choose a subject based on the topic you are researching. For a paper on gender and the environment, you might be especially interested in the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies guide and the Sustainability guide, but you might also find other subjects useful depending on your topic. 
3. Click on a guide (e.g. Sustainability) to view a list of Recommended Databases in that subject area. Hover over each recommended database to see what it contains. Choose a relevant database.
4. In the database, search using keywords relevant to your topic (e.g. climate change AND gender). Some databases contain more than just peer-reviewed journal articles, so look for an option to limit to only Scholarly or Peer-Reviewed (not all databases will have these limiters). 
5. Browse through titles to find relevant articles. Click on an article title that looks interesting to you to read the full text and download the PDF. If you are unable to find the full text of an article you want to read, ask a librarian about how you can get the article for free through Interlibrary Loan.

Through Google Scholar

1. Google Scholar is another great place to find journal articles. Go to scholar.google.com and enter keywords relevant to your research topic. 
2. You can link Google Scholar to the library website so you can easily access articles. In Google Scholar, click the three lines in the top left corner of the page, then go to Settings. Click Library Links on the left and type University of Louisville in the search box. Enter your ULink ID and password. When you search now, you will see PDFs appear on the right side of your search results for articles that the library owns. If you have trouble accessing the full text of an article you find through Google Scholar, just ask a librarian.

Finding Books

1. Go to library.louisville.edu. In the search box at the top of the screen, click the Books tab and search using keywords relevant to your topic. (e.g. climate change AND gender). Click Go.
2. Look through the results for any relevant titles. Click on a title you are interested in to see a Summary of the book and the Table of Contents for each chapter title. On the right side of the screen, you'll see where you can find the book. All you need is your Cardinal Card to check out a book at the library.
3. If a book you find is not available at UofL, you can request that the book be sent to you via Interlibrary Loan. Ask a Librarian if you have questions about this.
