Many federally funded grant programs, such as the NSF, require researchers to submit a data management plan with their proposal.
Basic data management plans will include:
- description of the project and data that will be produced
- standards used for metadata format and contents
- legal and ethical issues, such as intellectual property, copyright issues, and privacy
- how the data will be accessed, shared, and reused
- plan for short-term data storage, backup, security, disposal, and preservation
