Data Management Plans

Many federally funded grant programs, such as the NSF, require researchers to submit a data management plan with their proposal.

Basic data management plans will include:

  • description of the project and data that will be produced
  • standards used for metadata format and contents
  • legal and ethical issues, such as intellectual property, copyright issues, and privacy
  • how the data will be accessed, shared, and reused
  • plan for short-term data storage, backup, security, disposal, and preservation
