REDCap: Home

What is REDCap?

REDCap is a server software for building and managing online surveys and databases. It is designed to support online and offline data capture for research studies and operations. With REDCap you can design and distribute surveys, de-identify participant information, and export data to other formats and software for analysis and eventual preservation. REDCap has a customizable workflow that lets you decide who has access to what and how much access and control they have. Its intuitive use, helpful instructional videos, and easy-to-follow layout make collecting data much easier on you and your team. REDCap is actively developed by Vanderbilt University and receives regular updates and security fixes.

Key Features

  • Free, web-based, and user-friendly electronic data capture (EDC) tools for research studies
  • Databases can be quickly developed and customized for studies’ needs

Useful For

  • Collecting and tracking information and data from research studies
  • Scheduling study events (e.g., patient visits)
  • Conducting surveys

Advantages

  • Secure and web-based. Input data from anywhere in the world with secure web authentication, data logging, and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption.
  • Fast and flexible. Conception to production-level database in less than one day.
  • Multisite access. Projects can be used by researchers from multiple sites and institutions.
  • Fully customizable. You are in total control of shaping your database or survey.
  • Advanced question features. Auto-validation, branching logic, and stop actions.
  • Mid-study modifications. You may modify the database or survey at any time during the study.
  • Data import functions. Data may be imported from external data sources to begin a study or to provide mid-study data uploads.
  • Data comparison functions. Double data entry / Blinded data entry.
  • Export survey results to common data analysis packages. Export your data to Microsoft Excel, SAS, STATA, R, or SPSS for analysis.
  • Save your survey or forms as PDFs. Generate a PDF version for printing in order to collect responses offline.

What Support We Offer

Because research projects differ vastly within and across disciplines, there is no "one size fits all" support checklist that the library is able to offer. However, there are certain aspects of the research process and using REDCap that we are more than happy to help with:

  • Basic On-Boarding Training for REDCap Users—become familiar with all that REDCap has to offer as well as learn where to get help when you need it.
  • Account Management—creation of your account, password resets, and basic troubleshooting for your account
  • Project Consultations—provide guidance with basic design and suggestions for data input strategies if you get stuck
  • Training Sessions—help for you and your team at any stage in your project

The Library will also facilitate any consultations with ITS and Research Computing on any REDCap application performance issues.

What Support We DON'T Offer

At the library, we are happy to help where we can, but there are some areas where we just cannot offer assistance:

  • Create, configure, or maintain projects
  • Entering or editing data in projects
  • Running reports or generating analysis of project data

Though we are not able to offer direct support in these areas, if you need help, don't hesitate to reach out and we will try our best to direct you to helpful resources.
