Dwight Anderson: Dwight Anderson

Our library is named in honor of Dwight Anderson, accomplished pianist, teacher, and dean of the UofL School of Music from 1937 to 1955. He founded the UofL Music Library in the late 1940s.

Born in Chicago and raised in Pensacola, Florida, he graduated from the Cincinnati Conservatory in 1918. After a year in the Army during World War I, he returned to Cincinnati to pursue graduate studies, and later studied in Paris with Isidor Philipp for 2 years. In addition, he served as music critic for the Courier-Journal from 1944 to 1952. A driving force in the local music scene, he was instrumental in the founding of the Louisville Chamber Music Society, the Kentucky Opera Association, and the Louisville Orchestra. Mr. Anderson died in 1962, and the music library was named in his honor shortly after.
