Dr. Oates was a graduate of Wake Forest University in North Carolina. He donated a collection to their Rare Books Department in the 1990s. The Kornhauser Health Sciences Library's collection includes the inventory of this donation:

Wake Forest University also has a collection of Dr. Oates's personal and professional papers. This collection includes research notes, correspondence, article manuscripts, and sermons, among topics.
