Art Library Rare Books Collection HV 6558 .L3 box 5.2

One of 1,000 offset printed copies of the second edition printed at the Women's Graphic Center. An example of rape and/or female objectification is given on each recto page. Each opening has "Rape is" on the left (verso of the previous page) and an example of rape and/or female objectification on each recto page; the basic visual unit of the artist's book is the opening."Lacy tackled the subject of rape and the cultural attitudes that promote it in her first artist's book, produced in the Women's Design Program at California Institute of the Arts, Valencia. The title riffs on the Happiness Is book genre. Her mentor Sheila Levrant de Bretteville suggested that it open down the middle, the flaps joined with a sticker seal, to make the reader consciously aware of invading a private experience. Another of her teachers, the writer Deena Metzger, supported the development of the text. Two editions."--Artists' website, excerpted from Suzanne Lacy: we are here
