Johanna Drucker, Susan Bee
Art Library Rare Books Collection: PS 3554 .R68 G57 2002 box 2.1

"A Girl's Life is a graphic melodrama of romance, crime, and passion in which girls 'struggle to survive the snares and pitfalls of contemporary life.' Darkly comic and fiendishly noir, the mood of this book is expressed in colorful prose, lurid collage, and wildly adventurous typography. This collaboration between visual poet Johanna Drucker and painter/book artist Susan Bee is an exciting synthesis of two distinctive but sympathetic sensibilities which addresses adolescent angst in all of its fashionably gory details; 'accessory to a crime' takes on a whole new meaning in this book."-- Publisher's website

Limited edition of about 1000 offset printed, unnumbered copies. "Digital media and information technology became the center of my intellectual and professional life in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Coming to the University of Virginia at that moment immersed me in the world of digital humanities. The vocabulary and ideas this universe provided stimulated imaginative as well as academic work. This book was conceived as a playful expression of the imaginative responses provoked by conversations in which I found myself. It was meant to be playful, suggestive, funny, dark, critical, engaging, a little throw-off book done as an inside joke among the digerati". "This is a facsimile reprint of copy #50 of the original letterpress edition" — Colophon. Calling attention to the visual materiality of the text, this book attempts to halt linear reading, trapping the eye in a field of letters which make a complex object on the page. The work both embodies and discusses language as a physical form. — Granary Books.
