Iconography and Iconology: Articles

Why search for articles?

If you are searching for the use of a specific icon in a work of art, articles may be your best bet.  Articles often treat symbols or icons in depth, discussing their use and meaning in a particular context.  The art historical literature is full of contemporary and historical articles on any number of topics, so be sure that you search using appropriate keywords and subjects.

There are at least two ways to approach searching for iconography and iconology articles in databases:

  1. Use the list of suggested subjects for each article database (see the boxes labeled "ABM Subjects" and "BHA & RILA Subjects").
  2. Do a keyword search on the specific topic you are researching.
