Royal Photo Company Collection: Home

1913-ca. 1944, 20,415 items

Eugene Bradley and his sister Katherine operated a photography studio in Georgetown, Kentucky. Eugene served as photographer, with Katherine retouching, tinting, and finishing the prints. Along with studio portrait work, the Bradleys did location work that today yields excellent documentation of period domestic interiors. They also specialized in high school and college class photos. The collection includes class photographs from a variety of institutions, including the local Georgetown College, classes from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, Beaumont College in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, and several women’s academies in the wealthy bluegrass area surrounding Georgetown. The Bradleys developed a unique method for printing portrait negatives sandwiched with a second, ground glass plate on which Katherine drew elaborate scenes in pencil. They also operated a branch of their studio in Paris, Kentucky, until the 1940s.
