Two volumes contain essays on all of the world's literary languages plus "certain
other languages which, though lacking a written literature, were nevertheless
felt to be of sufficient interest and importance to warrant inclusion."
Each essay is divided into sections on background notes, scripts (if other
than Roman), phonology, morphology, illustrative text (most use verses 1-8
of St. John's Gospel), and a bibliography.
