MARC Record View

task bar with marc view chosen

The MARC View: MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) is the "raw data" of bibliographic description for library materials. This format is a communications standard used to transmit bibliographic data among computerized systems. The Technical display format is provided primarily as a convenience for library staff. Extensive and detailed information can be found on the MARC Standards web site at the Library of Congress, including, MARC 21: Concise Format for Bibliographic Data.

The MARC View is mainly used by library staff.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION:

The following information will display if present in the catalog record. Your search terms are highlighted within the record display.

MARC record view

  • Relevance:
A record retrieved by the Keyword--all fields Ranked search method displays a relevance indicator before the bibliographic information.  relevance bar relevance bar relevance bar relevance bar relevance bar is the most relevant record.
  • MARC Display:
A coded MARC record is displayed using numerically tagged fields and alphabetically tagged subfields. All the data in the record may be retrieved using a Keyword search (Keyword in the Advanced Keyword search method).
    • The MARC fields may include the date and time of latest cataloging transaction (005 field), the control field for special aspects of the material when it has multiple characteristics (006), the physical description fixed field (007), and the fixed-length data elements (008). Field 008 supplies coded information about the record as a whole and about special bibliographical aspects of the material cataloged.
    • Locally defined fields that are not displayed in any other Minerva view include the local processing field (906), local selection/retention field (925), local tracking field (955), record source or project history field (985) and preprocessing location/conversion field (991).
    • The fields are displayed in MARC 21 sort order, except that fields 906, 925, and 955 display near the top of the record.
    • A full listing of MARC 21 Equivalents for RLIN-Specific Field Tags is available from RLG and also from the Library of Congress Network Development and MARC Standards Office.

SEARCH, NAVIGATION, and OUTPUT INFORMATION:

Several lines of information relating to the search are displayed in MARC View:

  • Search Results:
A line identifies the currently displayed catalog record number within the total search set (e.g., Displaying 2 of 25 records, Displaying 1 of 10,000 records).
    • A search in Minerva never results in more than 10,000 catalog records, even when more than 10,000 records match the search. If the results set is truncated at 10,000, a warning message appears in the Titles List and Search Results List displays.
    • Subject, Author and Call Number searches are set to "browse" Minerva for the search term entered and all terms following in alphabetical order. Since this method does not create a distinct record set, the number of search results on each page always states: Displaying 1 through 50 of 50 records. This does not mean that only 50 records match your search criteria. You can browse forward and backward through this list using the previous and next buttons.
  • Navigation Icons:
If a search retrieves multiple catalog records, it is possible to page back and forward through the list, one record at a time, using the previous and next buttons.
  • Print, Save or E-mail
Below the display of the catalog record information is a table which offers Save Options. For more information consult the help screen for Print, Save or E-mail. The format of the record printed/saved/e-mailed is not the same as the view on the screen. Use the Print Screen browser button if you want to capture all of the information in this view.
