Copyright Statement
1 May 2003
Prepared by Dwayne K. Buttler, Associate Professor, University
Libraries,
Evelyn J. Schneider Endowed Chair for Scholarly Communication,
University of Louisville.
Copyright law protects an enormous range of works and most of the materials and resources accessible on this website. University Libraries and the University of Louisville own some of these copyrighted works; contributors, colleagues, and numerous other third parties own other works. Yet additional materials may enjoy no copyright protection at all. These "public domain" works could include works in which copyright has expired, after a lengthy duration now equaling "life of the author plus 70 years" in the United States, or works in which copyright never existed, such as facts, ideas, and similar elements of protectable "original expression."
Copyright law governs the use of copyrighted works on this website and elsewhere. "Licensing agreements" also may govern the use and access of certain works provided to University Libraries and accessible from this website. "Licensed" works might include electronic database resources, online journals, e-books, and similar materials. Publishers and compilers of these materials often require the University of Louisville to strictly limit access to these works solely to "authorized users" at the University of Louisville. These arrangements sometimes narrow vital copyright exemptions such as "fair use" and other rights or set further conditions of use.
Copyright law places responsibility for the lawful use of copyrighted works on the user of those works. As a user of copyrighted works and this website, you are solely responsible for complying with copyright law and for understanding and complying with licensing agreements covering the use of resources available on this site. Compliance would include understanding how copyright law or licensing requirements would apply to any and all uses of copyrighted works in the absence of permission and identifying the rightful owner of the copyrighted work for receiving valid permission to use that work. The University of Louisville makes no express or implied representations or warranties regarding materials, resources, and information located on or linked from this site, including but not limited to, whether the materials, resources, and information are suited for any particular purposes or are accurate and conform to any particular standards and processes at any given time. UofL also disclaims any liability for the use of or reliance upon any information gathered or linked from the University Libraries website.
Copyright permission is hereby given for the nonprofit and
educational reproduction, distribution, public performance,
and public display of copyrighted works owned by the University
of Louisville, University Libraries and available on the University
Libraries site only. This permission is in support of and
in addition to other rights afforded under "fair use,"
17 U.S.C. § 107, and related provisions, such as 17 U.S.C.
§108, of the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976, as amended.
Please include the copyright notice listed on the webpage
or material on any further reproductions and uses of these
UofL works. The University of Louisville prohibits any commercial
or for-profit use of UofL works beyond "fair use"
without the explicit and express permission of UofL. Please
contact Dwayne Buttler (dkbutt01@gwise.louisville.edu)
to seek permission to use UofL works available on the University
Libraries website for those purposes.

American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights
The American Library Association affirms that all libraries
are forums for
information and ideas, and that the following basic policies
should guide
their services.
- Books and other library resources should be provided for the interest, information, and enlightenment of all people of the community the library serves. Materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation.
- Libraries should provide materials and information presenting all points of view on current and historical issues. Materials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval.
- Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment.
- Libraries should cooperate with all persons and groups concerned with resisting abridgment of free expression and free access to ideas.
- A person's right to use a library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background, or views.
- Libraries which make exhibit spaces and meeting rooms available to the public they serve should make such facilities available on an equitable basis, regardless of the beliefs or affiliations of individuals or groups requesting their use.
