Known as "Louisville's Historian," George Henry Yater (1922-2006) grew up in the Beechmont neighborhood, graduating from St. Xavier High School. As a child and youth he became passionate about all aspects of Louisville's history as well as about trains. The author of the widely-acclaimed definitive history of Louisville, Two Hundred Years at the Falls of the Ohio: A History of Louisville and Jefferson County (1979), he also served as an advisor for The Kentucky Encyclopedia (1992) and as associate editor of The Encyclopedia of Louisville (2000). This collection consists largely of material relating to Yater's interests in the history of Louisville and the history of rail transportation.
