Name: Addison Lowry
Year: 2L
Hometown: Winchester, KY
Organizations: SBA Social Chair & Federalist Society member
Where did you complete your undergraduate degree, and what was your major?
I was a business major at the University of Kentucky. I also graduated with a double minor in political science and communications.
How did you settle on that combination of subjects? Have they been useful for law school?
I thought I would do physical therapy, but the chemistry classes weren’t working for me, so I decided I’d like to go to law school instead. Having a business major seemed like a good back up plan, so I could do an MBA if law school didn’t work out. A lot of undergraduates who want to become lawyers take political science, and I took a lot of communications classes for my general education requirements. I thought I might as well finish the communications minor, since I’d taken so many of the classes, and it ended up being really good preparation for law school with all the writing and public speaking experience.
What led you to the University of Louisville for law school?
I applied to several law schools, but settled on UofL because I wanted to live in a bigger city and have a change of scenery after living in and around Lexington for so long. It’s nice to still be close to family though.
Do you have any advice for new students?
Try to make law school fun whenever you can. It’ll really help, and having more people in your circle to lean on is important when things get tough.
This is your second year working in the Law Library – what do you enjoy most about the job?
Getting to know people’s faces from seeing them come through the library - I recognize so many more people now. I also know where all the books are, which is useful!
What is the most interesting job you’ve had so far?
This summer I worked at the Kentucky state police headquarters in their legal department. It was interesting, and outside the normal experience of working in government departments.
Is there a quote you live by?
I’m not sure there is, I almost always fly by the seat of my pants, but I do always remember something my dad says: “you get 80% of what you ask for and 0% of what you don’t”.
You’re only halfway through your time at law school, but have you started to think about what you’d like to do after you graduate?
I’d like to work in medical malpractice defense. Defending doctors is something I’d like to try, and I hope to get some experience working in a law firm. My five-year plan is to stay here but I’m not tied to the place, so if I was offered a job in a state with reciprocal bar recognition I’d consider moving too.
