Director of the Law Library, David Ensign, wrote the following reflection for the memorial services celebrating the life of Professor James T. R. Jones held at Brandeis School of Law on Monday, May 14, 2018.

The law library staff appreciates the support and friendship of Professor James T. R. Jones. He was a member of the Library Committee (a standing committee under law school bylaws) and the law library's Personnel Committee (which considers retention, promotion, and tenure for library faculty) for many years. He took a keen interest in matters considered by those committees and was an active participant on them. All law library faculty owe him a debt of gratitude for his support of their careers.

The library's collection includes copies of his book A Hidden Madness, published in 2011. The book is Jim's story of managing his personal life and his professional life while afflicted with bipolar disorder. Jim's well-crafted book is of great interest on many levels. It describes how individuals diagnosed with mental illnesses can nevertheless succeed in demanding vocations. Those familiar with the recent history of the Brandeis School of Law will recognize people and events he describes. Those of us who knew Jim personally gain a better understanding of what made him tick, perhaps wishing that we had that perspective earlier in our acquaintance with him. Jim describes struggling with the decision to write this book, risking the stigma associated with mental illness. His bravery in writing A Hidden Madness is a great service to readers, giving a better understanding of those among us affected by mental illness.
