Beyond Medline: Finding Journal Articles in Science Citation Index, SciFinder Scholar, and CSA Databases
While Medline is the most important resource for locating articles in the biomedical sciences, it certainly is not the only one. A thorough search of the published material in your area of research is an essential component for all grant proposals and manuscripts. Be aware of the availability of other such resources that the Kornhauser Health Sciences Library makes available that can expand your familiarity with the published literature you need to know.
- ISI Web of Science (Science Citation Index®) in addition to topic and author searching, provides Cited Reference Searching, a powerful to tool for tracking who has cited a particular article or author, how many times a particular article or author has been cited, and how to find related articles on a particular topic based on the common citations. This allows you to follow the history of an idea or a method from its first communication to the present day. The related resource, Journal Citation Reports will also be reviewed.
- SciFinder Scholar is the online name for Chemical Abstracts. It is the resource for information and journal articles about chemical substances and structures. This class is an introduction to using the database to find journal articles by author name, research topic, substance identifier, and chemical structure.
- Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA) Databases include the biomedically useful resources: Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology Abstracts; Algology, Mycology and Protozoology; Bacteriology Abstracts (Microbiology B); BioEngineering Abstracts; Biology Digest; Calcium and Calcified Tissue Abstracts; Chemoreception Abstracts; Conference Papers Index; Human Genome Abstracts; Immunology Abstracts; Industrial and Applied Microbiology Abstracts (Microbiology A); Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Abstracts; Toxicology Abstracts, TOXLINE; and Virology and AIDS Abstracts.
Beyond MEDLINE: Finding Journal Articles in Multidisciplinary and Related Social Sciences Database
With the increase in multidisciplinary research on the Health Sciences Campus, you may need to know about the dababases that bring the literature of your related fields into your research.
- ERIC database covers all aspects of educations, including biomedical education. Like MEDLINE its is aproduct of the federal government, the Department of Education. It includes journal articles, books, theses, curricula, conference papers, and standards and guidelines.
- Social Work Abstracts Plus is produced by the National Association of Social Workers. For more than 30 years, it has served as the starting point for literature searches in social work and social welfare. Over 400 U.S. and international journals are reviewed.
- Sociological Abstracts provides abstracts to articles 2,300 journals on all aspects of sociology. Topics covered since 1963 include anthropology collective behavior, community development, disaster studies, education, environmental studies, gender studies, gerontology, law and penology, marriage and family studies, medicine and health, racial interactions, social psychology, social work, sociological theory, stratification, substance abuse, urban studies, and journals and violence. Works with Sociological Collection which includes coverage of over 500 peer-reviewed journals in sociology, social behavior, human tendencies, human interaction, human relationships, community development, culture and social structure.
- HealthStar contains citations to the published literature on health services, technology, administration, and research, focusing on both the clinical and non-clinical aspects of health care delivery. Topics included are: evaluation of patient outcomes; effectiveness of procedures, programs, products, services and processes; administration and planning of health facilities, services and manpower; health insurance; health policy; health services research; health economics and financial management; laws and regulation; personnel administration; quality assurance; licensure; and accreditation.

The card catalog is gone. The tables full of volumes that indexed the journal articles are gone. The journals don't have call numbers. And everything is online anyway! So how can you find anything in the library? Let us help you resolve the mysteries involving the use of the modern electronic library and understanding the clues hidden in references to things that may just be important to you. Designed for anyone--support staff, students or faculty--who want to know more about the basics of library research.
Kornhauser Library History Collections
Curious about the history of medicine or the evolution of medical training and health care practices in Kentucky during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? If you have any interest in the history of medicine and/or medical education in our area, come hear archivist Katherine Burger Johnson's introduction to our collections of manuscripts, memorabilia, rare medical and scientific books and journals, antique medical and dental instruments, and other artifacts.
MEDLINE is a database produced by the National Library of Medicine. It contains citations for about 15 million journal articles on biomedicine. It includes articles from over 4500 journals from the over 30,000 biomedical journals in publication. It’s just one of many databases that you may use to find journal articles for clinical and research needs.

OVID is a company that buys the MEDLINE database from the National Library of Medicine, puts a web interface and search mechanism on the database and sell access to MEDLINE, as well as PsychINFO and dozens of other databases, to libraries.

Introductory OVID will teach you to take advantage of OVID's highly structured search engine that promotes the use of the Medical Subject Heading that are the foundation of MEDLINE. Learn how to search efficiently and effectively, using all of the special feature OVID provides to focus your search and improve your results.

Advanced OVID will build on the basics covered in the introductory class. It will cover shortcuts to searching, keyboard commands, ways to search using keywords, advances techniques for combining terms and more.

PubMed is another system for searching MEDLINE. This interface was created by the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the National Library of Medicine. It's easy to get results from PubMed; just type in a keyword and you'll get thousands of results. In this class you can discover all the special features in PubMed that will help you to produce more useful results in less time.

Thinking about getting your research results published? Do you know how to go about doing that? Do you know what happens after you submit an article to a journal for publication? Learn about how to choose a journal, find and follow the rules for publishing, and getting help at the library. We will examine types of articles published, how to choose a quality journal, appropriate ways to prepare a manuscript, and some legal and copyright issues.

- Introduction to Citation Mangement Software, Part II: Hands-on Reference Manager OR Hands-on EndNote After you have attended Introduction to Citation Management Software, have chosen which software you want to use, and installed it on your workstation, sign up for a special small group (6 max.) hands-on session focused on getting started with either Reference Manager or EndNote.
Tables of Contents and Article Search Updating Services
Many journals and journal collections offer services to notify you, via email, of the table of contents of current journals as they are published. You can also sign up for updates of article searches customizable to topics of your choosing. Create search strategies to locate new articles your your topics of interest as they are published. Find out which ones are best for you.
