Holds, Recalls & Searches
Holds
When a patron in good standing wants to borrow a book already on loan to another patron, a hold may be placed on the item by filling out a hold form. When the requested item is available, the patron who requested the hold will be notified and the item will be held at the Circulation desk for 10 days. If items placed on hold are not picked up within 10 days, they are returned to the stacks. Holds may not be placed on items in the Course Reserve collection. An "in-process" hold may be placed on library materials that are in "ordered" status.
Recalls
Only UofL faculty, staff, and students may recall an item on loan to another patron. Items may be recalled from any patron by filling out a recall form. Patrons from whom an item has been recalled will receive a recall notice informing them of the item's new due date. Failure to return recalled items results in suspension of borrowing privileges. Upon return of the recalled item, the original borrower may place a recall on the same book to have it returned 14 days after it is checked out to the other patron.
Searches
If an item is not checked out to a patron and cannot be located in our stacks, a patron can initiate a search for the item by filling out the search form. If the item is found, the patron will be notified and the book will be held at the Circulation desk for 10 days before being reshelved. A search request may be placed only after the patron has made an attempt to locate the item in the stacks.
