Iconography and Iconology
Iconography concerns the study of the subject matter or meaning of a work
of art as opposed to its form. It is usually divided into religious and
secular. Iconology is defined more broadly as the study of the meaning of
pictorial motifs within their cultural and historical context.

This volume indexes about 1500 personifications, conceits,
symbols, etc. according to their attributes, based on Iconoclass, an
iconographic classification system. The information is taken from five
different editions of Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, in which he
collected allegories, personifications, etc. that were widely used by
artists and writers, especially during the Baroque period. See Straten,
