Job Description: Dean, University Libraries
The Dean of University Libraries shall be the chief administrator for the University Libraries, which includes Ekstrom Library; the Kornhauser Health Sciences Library; the Dwight Anderson Memorial Music Library; the Margaret Bridwell Art Library and the University Archives and Records Center. The Dean of University Libraries reports directly to the Provost and is responsible for the successful administration of the Libraries in accordance with THE REDBOOK and all other properly authorized policies and procedures of the University of Louisville.
The Dean of University Libraries shall:
ADMINISTRATION
- Administer the policies of the University Libraries.
- Serve as a member of the President's Executive Cabinet and work effectively with the President, University Provost, Vice Presidents, Deans, and other administrators in the formation and administration of University policies.
- Engage in strategic planning consistent with the University-wide Strategic Plan to develop, coordinate, and evaluated the goals and objectives of all University Libraries.
- Provide effective and responsible management of the University Libraries' budget.
- Work closely with the Vice President for Information Technology.
- Facilitate joint planning in the application of computing and communications technology to the libraries' major functions.
- Coordinate planning efforts for the School of Law with the Law Librarian.
- Ensure that all libraries maintain effective coordination and cooperation with the deans.
- Work closely with the Office of Facilities Management in the planning of new library facilities.
- Assume other appropriate duties as designated by the University.
INSTRUCTIONAL AND RESEARCH SUPPORT
- Maintain and improve library services and collections in support of the curricular need of student and the instructional and research requirements of the faculty and staff.
- Foster, through the cooperative efforts of the library and unit faculties, the development of library skills among student and faculty.
LIBRARY FACULTY AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT
- Recruit high-quality faculty and staff members.
- Ensure effective affirmative action efforts.
- Oversee thorough staff evaluations, appropriate merit recommendations, and support of staff development.
- Promote and support the professional activities and research of the University Libraries faculty.
- Ensure consistent application of faculty promotion, tenure, and merit standards and oversee an annual process of peer review and evaluation of all Libraries Faculty
EXTERNAL RELATIONS AND DEVELOPMENT
- Strengthen external relations with the community.
- Expand networking, interlibrary cooperation, and shared information resources on local, state and national levels.
- Develop a program of effective fund raising on behalf of the Libraries.
