Marketing: Industry Research

Subject Guide for Marketing

Industry Codes

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is used by the U.S. government to classify business establishments when collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. economy. This six-digit coding system was developed in conjunction with Canada and Mexico in 1997 to replace an earlier four-digit Standard Industrial Classification (SIC), but both systems are still in use today.

These government websites can help you identify the correct NAICS and SIC codes for a particular industry and the codes, in turn, can be used to help locate industry data in a variety of resources.

Trade Associations

♦ Trade Associations

Trade association websites frequently contain or provide links to reports, data, and other information relevant to specific industries. Names of key trade associations can usually be found in industry and company profiles. These sites provide links to some of the many trade associations in the U.S.
